Recreation: Ropes Course for Fun and Team Building

Obstacle courses have existed in multitudinous forms for as long as humans have participated in athletics. They have been a standard feature of military training in many countries throughout history. In the twentieth century, however, a sub-specialty of obstacles courses referred to as ropes courses have developed primarily for civilian use.

Those who have attended children’s summer camps have probably experienced a ropes course, perhaps known by a different name. A ropes course is a serious of obstacles, both concrete and abstract. The purpose of the course is not only to pass over, under, or through the obstacles but to do so with the cooperation of others. These courses have become more popular as they’ve become more widespread, and are now used not only by summer camps, but by businesses to build confidence and trust between co-workers, and by weekend enthusiasts, with friends and family.

Many parks and recreation departments feature ropes courses, as well as community centers and some gyms. There are even companies which specialize in providing ropes courses. These may be mobile courses, available for rent by groups, or they may be permanently installed.

Most modern ropes courses are extremely safe, utilizing proper safety equipment, and trained staff on hand to supervise their use. A ropes course experience can be an excellent way to spend quality time with one’s family or friends, or even a way of meeting new people.
